“Falcon”, the film by Marco Bellocchio about Sergio Marchionne, produced by Emotion Network, Kavac Film and Rai Cinema, enters its production phase with the announcement of Pierfrancesco Favino in the lead role.
Filming will begin in September 2026 and will take place across Italy, the United States and Canada. The project is produced by Mattia Mor for Emotion Network, Simone Gattoni for Kavac Film, and Rai Cinema.
Announced exclusively by Variety in September 2025, “Falcon” aims to portray one of the most influential figures in the global automotive industry through the vision of one of Italy’s most acclaimed contemporary filmmakers.
The film is directed by Marco Bellocchio, recipient of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice International Film Festival and an Honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, who will bring to the screen the professional and human journey of Sergio Marchionne.
The film is based on extensive research drawing on exclusive testimonies and on a screenplay written by Marco Bellocchio, Ludovica Rampoldi, Andrea Di Stefano and Stefano Rulli, with the collaboration of Oliviero Del Papa.
“Falcon” will retrace the key moments of Marchionne’s story: from his early managerial career to Fiat’s turnaround, from managing the Chrysler crisis to the creation of FCA, through the challenges that accompanied one of the most complex industrial transformations in the global automotive sector.
At the heart of the story will not only be the manager who led a radical transformation of the automotive industry, but also the man behind the role: his insights, difficult decisions, contradictions, and his relationship with an economic and institutional environment that often debated his choices and vision.
As Marco Bellocchio stated at the announcement of the project:
“I like the idea of telling the story of an Italian who challenges two giants in America, GM and Chrysler, and wins. Upon returning home, he is met with hostility by some Italian institutions from the left, centre and right. In the end, one might say that he was a ‘tragic winner’.”
“Falcon” will begin production in September 2026 and will be released in cinemas by 01 Distribution, before becoming available for streaming on HBO Max.
